What’s to come for Windows 10 in 2016

2016 is now just around the corner, and Microsoft have promised that the new year will bring lots of upgrades, fixes, and new releases for its new operating system Windows 10. Let’s take a look at what some of these might be.

Improvements to Microsoft Edge

Microsoft Edge was announced with some fanfare when Microsoft Windows 10 was released, and it was billed as a competitor to the major browsers on the market like Google Chrome and Firefox. The reception to Microsoft’s new browser, however, as has been limited so far. So, Microsoft is stepping up its game, and in 2016 is releasing a whole host of updates and improvements for Edge, including extensions, add-ons, and general usability improvements. Microsoft hope that this will lead to more Windows 10 users preferring the browser over more established third party software, but the jury is definitely still out on Microsoft’s brand new internet browser.

Augmented reality

In chime with current technological developments, Microsoft is looking to launch augmented and virtual reality headsets for Windows 10 in 2016. This means technological opportunities for businesses and brands, and the chance to get involved in VR before it becomes huge, as is predicted to happen in 2017.

No more free upgrade

When Windows 10 was first announced earlier in the year, one of its main selling points was that it would be provided as a free upgrade to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users. Microsoft hoped that this would mean more of its customers would make the switch to the new operating system, but reception thus far has been mixed, and Microsoft have had to step up their drive to encourage people to upgrade over the past few months.

They have done this in a several ways, like automatically downloading the upgrade files to PCs, or by blocking third party software designed to delay the upgrade. However, as of the end of June next year, Windows 10 will no longer be available as a free upgrade, which means that if you want to update to the new operating system, you need to do so in the first half of the coming year, after which it is assumed you will have to pay to license the software.
