Three ways to improve your Outlook junk email filter
There is something incredibly irritating about junk mail, especially for those who have spam filters in place but still seem to receive it. You want to be able to go into your inbox, glance through your messages, and then exit and get on with your day, but instead you end up wasting time sifting through a myriad of unwanted emails.
No more! If you’re determined to get on top of the problem, here are a few top tips to help you…
Select a spam protection level
Outlook 2016 has a fantastic feature that few of us know about – the ability to change our junk email filter settings. You’ll need to start by clicking Home > Junk > Junk Email Options, which will present you with four main choices: no automatic filtering, low level, high level, and safe lists only. The latter is laborious to set-up, so most security experts recommend choosing high level instead.
Disable phishing links and request warnings
There are another two boxes to take note of in your ‘Options’ folder. The first allows you to disable links and other functions in phishing messages, whilst the second enables you to request warnings about suspicious domain names in email addresses. Both of these should be checked, and you may also want to tick the box that permits the permanent deletion of suspected junk emails. Be aware, however, that doing this could lead to improperly captured but legitimate email being deleted too.
Regularly update Outlook
Last but not least, we recommend taking advantage of Outlook updates to make sure that you always have the latest filtering technology present to protect you. With spammers and bulk mail senders continuously developing new methods of infiltrating your inbox, you need to fight fire with fire, and this means utilising all the tools at your disposal. The only way to use these is with regular software updates, so set them to automatic to keep your inbox free of spam.
Take action today to protect your inbox by easily improving your email and spam filtering. We guarantee that the difference it makes will be well worth the minimal amount of effort required to change and upgrade your settings.
