PC sales continue to plummet due to Windows 10
According to market figures, the anticipated rush to adopt new, Windows 10-powered PCs has failed to materialise. IDC reports global PC sales down 11.5% and Gartner reports them down by 9.6% for the first quarter of 2016. That’s as businesses seem content running their current systems and OS, or using the free upgrade to Windows 10, with increasing cloud services adoption negating the need for more powerful hardware.
The free update deadline for Windows 10 is fast approaching, at the end of July. After that time. companies may be more likely to upgrade older systems. But, for now, the market will struggle on with PC makers trying to sell their high margin executive systems to a disinterested audience. End users, however, have a world of choice of low-cost cloud services to help advance and cater to their business needs, without the need for costly updates.
Cloud services such as Office 365 and storage and backup features all help businesses stay current without the need for new hardware. Many businesses are also turning to shared, remote and mobile working, and BYOD working methods to ease the need for any company-owned hardware. Whatever the solution, all companies need to be aware that older PCs will eventually fail, Microsoft will soon stop supporting older operating systems, and whatever your plans, there has never been a greater need for information and network security, adequate backup and disaster recovery plans, and flexibility in IT.
